10. The clock tricks went on for years(Paying Attention to Attention - Part 10 - August 8, 2011)I had a watch I kept set 13 or 16 minutes fast, sometimes just 12. Just enough to give me a chance at being early (if I ever fell for my own trick, which rarely happened for more than a glancing moment). And the odd increments made me have to at least do math for a minute to guess at the real time, which had a little chance (very little) or reminding me what planet I was on long enough to remember I was supposed to be some place other than where I was at that moment. Whenever someone would ask me the time, I'd look and do the math (see that phrase a lot around here, doncha? - do the math, do the math... and I hated math in school) and say the result of my quick calculations. Sometimes I'd just say "it's about 10 to 12" or whatever, coz that was easier than doing the math. At least once, someone asked me why I said it's "about" some time when I was looking at a digital watch and wouldn't it be easier to just read the damn numbers? When I'd get home 60 or 90 or more minutes later than expected, I'd look at the clock and it would say I was 75 or 105 minutes later than expected, and I'd do the math and feel instantly just a little less ashamed of myself, because I wasn't THAT late, after all. I know, it's really f-ing embarrassing to even blog about it, let alone to have lived it, shaped it, defended it and wandered around lost it it all that time. |
